Prof. László Borhi

Peter A. Kadas Associate Chair & Professor of Central European History

Indiana University

Dealing with Dictators, explores America’s Cold War efforts to make the dictatorships of Eastern Europe less tyrannical and more responsive to U.S. interests. Through careful study of American and Hungarian sources, Borhi assesses why some policies toward Hungary achieved their goals while others did not. The process by which the transition from Soviet satellite to independent state occurred in Hungary sheds light on the dynamics of systemic change in international politics at the end of the Cold War.

[Unicum] Violins of Hope-PROGRAM AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MARCH 23 AT NOON

Lecture by Amnon Weinstein and Avshalom Weinstein

Musical Performance by Hannah Tarley

Thursday, March 23, at 12:00 Noon

Mumford Room, 6th floor Madison Building, Library of Congress

Amnon Weinstein has spent the last two decades locating and restoring violins that were played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. After growing up to become one of the most respected violin makers in the world, Weinstein started locating violins that were played by Jews in the camps and ghettos and repaired them so they could be brought to life again on the concert stage. Although most of the musicians who originally played the instruments were silenced by the Holocaust, their voices and spirits live on through the violins. He calls these instruments the Violins of Hope. His son Avshalom, a third-generation luthier, will tell us the story behind each of the violins. A musical performance using one of the rescued violins will be given by world-renowned violinist Hannah Tarley.

The program is free and open to the public.
