[Unicum] Invitation: 1956: The Freedom Fight that Changed the Cold War - Program

Her Excellency the Ambassador of Hungary, Dr. Réka Szemerkényi, requests the pleasure of your company at a special symposium on the topic "1956: The Freedom Fight that Changed the Cold War - Geopolitics and Defense Policy" at the prestigous National Defense University on Wednesday, October 12, at 9:00 o'clock A.M. NDU President, Major General Frederick M. Padilla, will preside over opening ceremonies alongside the Honorable István Simicskó, Minister of Defense of Hungary.

Although the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and its subsequent political fallout have since been well-documented, questions still remain as to the exact Soviet perception of the Revolution and how and why subsequent political and military decision were made by the United States and other Western powers not to provide military aid to the Hungarian Freedom Fighters, or indeed to the Czechs in 1968 and the Poles in 1980. Panel discussions have accordingly been organized around two primary topics of debate: first, a broad investigation into Hungary's and the larger group of the so-called satellite countries' role in the late 1950s global geopolitics; and, second, an exploration of the events of the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight from a strategic, operational and tactical military point of view. The moderator will introduce each topic as well as its chosen panelists – a diverse group of distinguished civilian and military historians from Hungary and United States.
