(Career Progress) Opening: Senior Organizer, Reinvestment_ Community Change

About Community Change and Community Change Action:

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description: 

The central task of the Senior Organizer is to provide multi-state coordination and support to community-based organizations and coalitions, with the ultimate goal of increasing the power and scale of those organizations and coalitions. The Senior Organizer will provide leadership in meeting Reinvestment Team Essential Outcomes and will focus on local and state-level reinvestment team campaigns and connecting them, when appropriate, to electoral, immigration, and economic justice work at the national level.

A portion of time will be spent working with Community Change's sister organization, Community Change Action.

Principal Responsibilities:  

  • Lead the development of a cohort of Black-led community organizations in the U.S., primarily focused in but not limited to the South.

  • Deliver strategic planning assistance and organizational support to partner organizations as part of work to build power in target states and with targeted communities. Assistance and support may include but not be limited to leadership development, fundraising, base building, and power analysis processes.

  • Work with key partners and ally organizations in order to wield political power in their cities and states and to act in concert with one another.

  • Work as a liaison between Community Change's campaign priorities and target state allies and partners.

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with leadership organizations in target states.

  • Participate in Community Change All Staff Calls, Community Change Staff Retreats, and weekly Reinvestment Team Staff Calls.

  • Represent Community Change in a professional manner within the organization, to Community Based Organizations, funders, allied organizations, in assigned groups, and committees, and at all times to the general public.

  • Comply with Community Change policy that requires all employees to be responsible for administrative duties such as following all due dates on reports, timesheets, and all fiscal and personnel policies and requests.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Director of Black Led Organizing and Power Building

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 8-10 years experience in community organizing and in implementing local, state, or national policy initiatives on community reinvestment issues.

  • Experienced in community organizing training including basic principles of community organizing, development of leaders and organizations in an organizing context, issues, and campaign development, training new organizers, and leadership development.

  • Familiarity with and openness to different approaches to grassroots organizing and policy work.

  • Strong facilitation and relationship-building skills.

  • Experience in non-partisan electoral work is helpful.

  • Demonstrated experience in organizational assessment and development; ability to provide significant help in organizational and coalition development.

  • Strong team player, familiar with team dynamics, and willing to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work democratically and effectively with diverse groups and people.

  • Willing to work long flexible hours including nights and weekends and to travel extensively.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills.

  • Strong commitment to social justice and social change.

  • Familiarity with some of the issues that Community Change currently works on, such as poverty, criminal justice reform, jobs, economic justice, immigration and/or other issues.

  • The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential.

  • Comfortable using cloud-based technology including Google Suite and dynamic databases like Salesforce.

  • Ability to speak a second language is a plus.

This position report to: Deputy Director of Black-Led Organizing

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change's bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements: 40%-60% of the time.

Salary & benefits: The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $90,000 commensurate with experience. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.

Position Location: Position will be remote.

Position Description: 

The central task for the Field Organizer is to provide organizing and field assistance to key Reinvestment Team partners. The Field Organizer will support partners with campaign development, strategy, communications, and implementation and coordinate partners' collective campaign work on regional and federal levels.

The Field Organizer will also provide leadership on narrative and messaging strategies and tactics to support and amplify the Black Freedom Collectives campaigns, actions, and overall work.

A portion of time will be spent working with Community Change's sister organization, Community Change Action.

Principal Responsibilities:  

  • Work with RIT to identify the organizing and training capacity needs of key existing and new partner organizations to build their power to win changes at the local, state, and federal levels

  • Work with grassroots partners to advance local policy campaigns that advance wins on critical issue priorities focusing on organizing and effective messaging and communication.

  • Assist partner organizations to develop and advance strategies for building alliances, partnerships, and coalitions with others to enhance their power and achieve their goals, including organizational and strategic development work, fundraising, leadership training, communications, and non-partisan electoral work.

  • Coordinate rapid response and cross team CC campaigns  to develop state or national strategies, actions, and campaigns as necessary

  • Develop key messaging and communication tactics to effectively communicate BFC priorities, actions, and campaigns and engage with BFC partners and our broader list

Qualifications:

(Career Progress) Operations and Finance Director -- VoteRiders -- Remote position

VoteRiders Operations and Finance Director

Founded 10 years ago, VoteRiders is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is focused on voter ID education and assistance. We work nationwide and in key states to raise awareness of voter ID laws, make sure voters know what ID they need to vote in their state, and provide comprehensive assistance if they need it. Our programs identify, educate and help voters with voter ID issues so they can vote with confidence, knowing they cannot be turned away.

We are seeking an experienced and highly-motivated Operations and Finance Director to help us support and scale our growing program portfolio and partnerships, as well as our nationwide staff and volunteer base. This individual will report to the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director in implementing and closely monitoring organization-wide systems and processes, including managing financial transactions undertaken by the organization, its staff, and volunteers. The Operations and Finance Director will have significant management responsibilities across VoteRiders' human resources, operations, and financial management policies and procedures.

This is a full-time permanent position and is available ASAP. This position has one direct report and occasional part-time direct reports, in addition to some vendor and volunteer management. This individual may be located anywhere within the United States.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

30% General Operations & Special Projects

  • Maintain and manage organizational databases and files
  • Monitor adherence to and design/implement updates as needed to organizational standard operating procedures
  • Continue the implementation of a systems and tools audit and assessment (started in early 2021), involving the improvement and replacement of select systems and management and optimization training for staff and volunteers
  • Manage ongoing workflow system and tool improvements, including the development and rollout of an organization-wide voter intake system and training staff/volunteers on how to use it. Pull regular reports and analyses as needed
  • Provide limited and as-needed IT support for staff and volunteers including research, training, and ongoing troubleshooting

30% Financial Management

  • Negotiate with and manage vendors and suppliers
  • Manage vendor pricing and ongoing costs including monthly reconciliation and reporting
  • Process and pay all non-HR vendor invoices
  • Produce monthly expense reports that align with organizational budget line-items
  • Track budget on an ongoing basis and update it with incurred expenses/income, including flagging any variations in line-items and overall vs projections
  • Produce reports as needed on expenses/budget snapshots
  • Produce drafts of budgets and financial reports for proposal-writing and development purposes as needed
  • Manage VoteRiders' annual audited financials process, working with an external firm and the Board Audit Committee
  • Update VoteRiders financial policies and procedures document on an as-needed basis (building on existing draft policies)

30% Human Resources & Personnel

  • Manage payroll, working with payroll and workers' comp providers; pull and provide regular reports to accountants
  • Manage health reimbursement program with third-party administrator; pull and provide regular reports to leadership team
  • Manage general HR inquiries including but not limited to pay stubs, sick days, vacation requests, health reimbursements
  • Work with HR vendor and HR-relevant state agencies, as occasionally needed, including but not limited to state business and nonprofit tax registration and reporting
  • Handle annual insurance renewals, including managing staff and volunteer auto insurance compliance
  • Work with leadership on organization and departmental structure with consistent, equitable hiring process including job description and salary band reviews, job posts, employee intake and departure process
  • Manage Employee Handbook review and acknowledgement process
  • Establish and manage performance review process
  • Encourage team morale and wellness through policies, procedures and professional development, ensuring role clarity across teams with clear, effective communication channels and representation
  • Research and implement a retirement planning program for employees based on Board approval

10% Expense Reconciliation

  • Oversee, ensure quality control, and ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures in expense reconciliation
  • With Operations Assistant, train staff and volunteers on expense reconciliation and reimbursement processes and systems
  • Manage related systems and tool costs, ensuring that our expense reconciliation software is meeting organizational needs and providing value for money

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Undergraduate degree with major in business, finance, management, or related field
  • Significant experience in similar role, including ideally at a nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage details with precise accuracy
  • Resourcefully solve problems and follow through with minimum direct supervision
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills and highly responsive
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to build strong and sustainable collaborative relationships that achieve actionable results
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Must believe in the value of VoteRiders and be driven by its mission
  • Regular and consistent access to a reliable computer, internet signal, and telephone
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Suite, Google Suite with aptitude to learn new software and systems
  • Experience with Quickbooks and other accounting software

Preferred/Plus

  • Advanced degree in business, finance, or CPA
  • Experience with donation and CRM software, database platforms, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and VAN
  • Spanish language skills

 

COMPENSATION

This position has a salary range of $85,000- $110,000 annually, commensurate with experience, as well as healthcare benefits, paid sick leave, and paid time off per the policies outlined in VoteRiders' Employee Handbook.
