(Career Progress) GMO Campaign Director Needed (DC area , US PIRG)

U.S. PIRG is hiring a Program Director to lead our national GMO Labeling Program. We're looking for an experienced political advocate who will be directing campaign strategy to pass mandatory GMO labeling laws, influencing stakeholders, political organizing, coalition-building, fundraising, and developing staff.

While the U.S. is one of only two industrialized countries without mandatory GMO labeling, some major grocery stores, like Whole Foods, have committed to label foods containing genetically modified ingredients. But labeling GMO foods shouldn't be the exception—it should be the law. While we have a federal law requiring manufacturers to list ingredients on food packaging, we do not have this same basic information about genetically-modified foods. Crops that are genetically modified are designed for increased pesticides and herbicides, which have been linked to serious health impacts. More than 96 percent of the public polled supports labeling GMOs. Consumers should have the opportunity to make food choices through good labeling laws.  The Program Director would develop and drive the campaign—making a real change to the status quo.

  • Fundraising: Write grant proposals, build relationships with foundation staff, and meet with major donors. Work with our citizen outreach staff to build and develop our membership base.

We're looking for people who are goal-driven and results-oriented, who have excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work.
