(Career Progress) HIRING: Chief Financial Officer

Civic Nation seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve on Civic Nation's Executive Leadership team who will be responsible for overseeing the financial health of the organization and providing strategic vision, planning, and oversight over Civic Nation's initiatives and all financial matters. The ideal candidate must be well-versed in various aspects of financial management, planning, budgeting, forecasting, analyzing Civic Nation's financial health, proposing operational efficiencies, and developing strategic growth goals for the organization.

The CFO will also be accountable for building and leading highly efficient financial and risk management operations for Civic Nation and its initiatives. This will include the development and successful implementation of accounting and financial systems, policies, internal controls, metrics tied to driving financial performance, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to report accurate and meaningful financial results.

YOUR IMPACT

Financial Management & Organizational Oversight 

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate Civic Nation's fiscal function and performance, including but not limited to; general accounting, data processing, purchasing, accounts payable and accounts receivable by organizational policies and procedures and regulatory policies
  • Serve as the chief financial strategist, educator, and a thought leader on all financial matters and develop strong professional working relationships with all staff and the Board of Directors
  • Engage with members of leadership to develop the annual budget for the organization and its Initiatives
  • Oversee and manage systems and procedures to track and report expenses
  • Oversee all banking activities and cash flow - ensuring revenues and expenses stay in balance
  • Compile and analyze financial reporting packages (weekly, monthly, and quarterly financial and operating reports) for all departments and Initiatives 
  • Ensure financial processes are efficient and that internal controls are established and followed to safeguard assets 
  • Ensure that Civic Nation complies with all legal and regulatory 501(c)(3) requirements
  • Identify and manage business risks and insurance requirements
  • Directs annual audit preparation and ensures preparation of audit work papers, final audited financial statements, annual IRS form 990, state filings, and other required reports
  • Manage the negotiation and execution of organizational contracts with funding sources, vendors, and collaborative service providers
  • Design, modify, and implement metrics to give leadership visibility to manage team budgets
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO and Civic Nation's Board of Directors

Leadership 

  • As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, help identify and prioritize long-term goals and strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of Civic Nation
  • In partnership with other members of leadership, facilitate the use of financial objectives and key results (OKRs), performance indicators, metrics, and analysis to inform decision-making and foster accountability
  • Build strong relationships, trust, and communication with Initiative leads to ensure the financial health of each initiative. 
  • Oversees the finance & accounting department staff and operations; has primary signature authority for checks, check requests, purchase orders, expense reports, miscellaneous payroll disbursements, and petty cash
  • Provide support and services to the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors
  • Foster alignment of Civic Nation's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals with financial strategies

YOUR EXPERIENCE

  • 15+ years of experience in the financial sector; preferably within nonprofit organizations 
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in an executive leadership capacity
  • Demonstrated experience in financial preparation and responsibility for financial reporting for an organization with an annual budget of at least $15M
  • CPA and/or CMA strongly preferred

YOUR COMPETENCIES

  • Technical and comprehensive knowledge of accounting and finance
  • Diverse and broad financial experience, ideally across multiple industries, and a track record as a strategic partner to leadership in managing growth
  • Ability to communicate high-level strategic vision and the details associated with variances against budgets/forecasts to the Executive Team, Leadership, and the Board of Directors
  • Highest level of integrity, sound judgment, and a demonstrated respect for diversity in all forms
  • Proven ability to develop and leverage systems and technology to enhance financial analysis
  • Excellent knowledge of data analysis, risk management, and forecasting methods
  • Ability to lead the implementation or use of commonly used accounting systems, such as Netsuite or Sage.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The Washington, DC-based salary range for this position is $170,000 - $210,000 (will be adjusted for cost of labor for the incumbent's work location) annually, commensurate with experience. MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY

Civic Nation is committed to protecting our employees and our communities from COVID-19. Toward that goal, and in consideration of guidance released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and a variety of public health authorities and professional organizations, Civic Nation has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for its employees.

All employees are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as a term and condition of employment at Civic Nation unless an exemption or deferral has been approved. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after they get their second dose of a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine, such as Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, or two weeks after a single dose of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

New employees must be fully vaccinated before their start date unless an exemption due to a medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief or practice is granted.
