Subject: Heavy Air Sailing Tutoring Session Tues Night 6 PM June 26 (Flying Scots)

Hello SCOW Members,

I'd like to offer a Flying Scot tutoring session tomorrow Tues June 26 at 6 PM. Winds are predicted to gust to 20 kts, so this would be a heavy-air lesson in how to do basic maneuvers like tacking, jibing and docking in heavy air. So long as the winds are not over 20 kts, we'll reef the sail, don PFDs and head on out. The session is open to any current SCOW member, but for you to take the tiller, you'll need to have some decent skills already established. Only 4 will go out in the boat at one time, so if there are more than 4 students, we'll stay near the docks and trade off. All can participate in the sail reefing demonstration.

Please note I am not encouraging anyone to routinely sail under these conditions, but rather this is to give the skipper some feel for the boat when winds do kick up, as they can do unpredictably at any time (or if a storm suddenly comes up), and it's better to be prepared and have experienced this under somewhat controlled conditions, than to be caught unprepared.

Please also note that not knowing the actual conditions tomorrow, we're going to play this by ear and only go out if I think it's reasonably safe. This is the first time I'm trying this type of training, so please bear with me if you do opt to come out. Also, if you see that the wind traces are above 20 kts, or if NOAA predicts any winds higher than 20, this will be cancelled. Email me tomorrow about 4 PM if you are uncertain about tomorrow's status.

Please RSVP to Jim Klein only. Thanks,

Jim
