Thanks Jim, for your fine racing presentation, yesterday. Also, appreciate the f/u comments & videos from you & Charles to highlight some of your teaching points.
So intrigued, I googled the American Cup 2012 (viewing now, w/ a more informed context). Exciting racing at it's best!
EnJoy! Jamie

Listen closely at the end:One thing you have to appreciate is that to make the racing more exciting for spectators, they have played with the rules a bit. Normally the start line is perpendicular to the wind, meaning you start the race sailing close hauled upwind. In the case of these America's Cup World Series races however, they line is nearly parallel with the wind, making the boats start on a reach. The boats are traveling much faster on a reach than close hauled, meaning they have to be much better at timing the start and have much faster reaction times in changing conditions. Here's another couple views of the collision. You can hear before the crash, "He shut us out," and then afterwards, "Jimmy shut us out." You can hear someone from the race committee boat saying, "You're breaking the boats there Russ [Russell Coutts]. Hey ... . You're breaking the boats mate."And here's Coutts' account:See you on the water,CharlesOn Mon, Sep 10, 2012 at 9:39 PM, Jim Klein <jimk4490@yahoo.com> wrote:
Hello,For those who attended tonight's meeting and presentation on Racing Rules, here's the YouTube video showing what happens when you get 'shut out' at the start line while attempting to barge. We were going to try to show this at the meeting but the logistics did not work out. Many of you have probably already seen this. It's short.Jim--
