It depends on what area of practice you need legal representation in. For example, a real estate attorney is not qualified to accept--nor will he or she accept--a child custody case any more than an orthpedic surgeon will be qualified to accept a brain surgery case because it falls into the jurisdiction of a neurosurgeon
Yes, all attorneys know a little bit about all fields of legal practice--just as all doctors know a little bit about all fields of medicine--but not enough and not as much as one who specializes in it. And no ethical lawyer will accept a case outside of his field of expertise.
Also choosing a lawyer depends on what state you live in because laws can vary from state to state--sometimes even in different counties of the same state. Furthermore, the law requires that an attorney be licensed to practice in whatever state he undertakes to represent a client in. Many are licensed to practice in several states--especially those in the DC, MD, VA area.
